O2.VodafoneBritish mobile operator Vodafone will become the third to start retail sales of the Apple iPhone.

The other day another UK operator – Orange (owned by France Telecom) – announced it has reached an agreement with Apple to start selling the iPhone in the UK at the end of this year, without disclosing an exact date.

Introduction of two new iPhone operators will put an end to the O2 monopoly for iPhones retail sale and service in the UK.

iPhone was put on sale in the UK in November 2007. It can be bought in Apple or in Carphone Warehouse mobile shops, or in O2 shops (currently the largest mobile service provider in the UK owned by Spanish Telefonica). Meanwhile, all iPhones are intended for use only in O2 network.

Meanwhile, O2 is not going to give in and will continue selling iPhone. It has already announced that O2 will be an exclusive distributor of a new multimedia smartphone Palm Pre which is called by some market experts an “iPhone killer”

Apple’s iPhone 3GS: What Is Its Price Conditioned By?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The general look of the new iPhone 3G S is quite similar to the iPhone released last summer. But there have been some important changes inside the new iPhone. The 3GS comes in 16- and 32-gigabyte varieties; the prior model is the one with 16GB chip.

The reason of cost increase lies in NAND flash memory price going up. It’s used to store music, video, and apps on the iPhone.

Apple is one of the world’s biggest consumers of NAND flash memory, and has been cooperating since 2005 with chipmakers like Samsung and Hynix, among others, though in the unit used for the teardown the flash supplier was Toshiba.

Some components of the new iPhone are cheaper alongside with the fact that they’ve been improved significantly. That can be attributed to multitouch display which was improved be adding an oleophobic coating which doesn’t attract fingerprints and cleans more easily.

Some components are missing from the iPhone 3GS completely. E.g. broadcom controller chip connected to the display.
