Merry Smartphone: the Dual-Core LG Optimus 2x

Posted in Android, OS, Smartphones

Gadget lovers are no doubt excited about their next New Year gift. LG has officially announced the upcoming launch of the first world dual-core Android-powered smartphone in 2011. LG Optimus 2x will be available in Korea in January of 2011, whereupon the sales around the world will begin.

The sleek device is intended to operate in GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and WCDMA/HSPA (900/2100 MHz) networks. It boasts a Tegra 2 chipset, while its 1 GHz dual-core processor makes it easy to play flawlessly as much as 1080 p videos both on the 4-inch device’s screen (800×480 pixels) and on big screen plasma TVs, if plugged with an HDMI cable. It’s supposed to be very convenient, because, apparently, an amazing number of people have been longing to play Android games on a big screen.

Anyway, the memory size can be extended from 8 Gb by default to 32 Gb with a microSD, which is quite appropriate considering that full HD video recordings produce large-sized files to store. Then there we have whole two cameras: an 8 megapixel rear camera with an “actual” automatic zoom and a tiny 1.3 megapixel front one for the futuristic video calls, obviously. The 3.5 mm audio jack, gyro and proximity sensors and accelerometer are simply must-haves for a device like this, so operational system and app development for it are pretty much the only things to follow there.

The miraculous gadget will be originally operated by Android 2.2 Froyo, but the support of an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread is naturally implied.

The dual-core buddy will most likely be able to deal with more upgrades than that, but what the masses are wondering about is its power consumption issue. How long will the device be able to hold on to a standard Li-Ion 1500 mAh battery? Doesn’t it need battery enhancement for the second core? How thick will the phone be then? Will it have extra RAM for flawless multitasking? The stress should be eased in January, no?
