An emerging Norwegian startup releasing mobile community apps Mama and Buddy.
Mobile Software AS initially approached our team about building a location-based social network and community app which would come to be called Buddy. The app allows you to geolocate friends on a map, add new friends to your friends community and communicate with them directly via HD video.
The codebase and algorithm of Buddy would serve as the bases of another mobile application further developed by the Intellectsoft team. This second geo-locating app, titled Mama, is focused on building a “safety community” for the user and is designed to let family members notify each other if they find themselves in a dangerous situations.
As the Mama app is designed for use in emergency situations, it needed to be easy to use in moments of distress and the app’s infrastructure had to be secure and reliable. Furthermore, the app needed to establish a clear advantage over existing mobile safety apps.
The solution we arrived was able to match those expectations and exceed them. The Mama app allows the user to track and share their location to trusted contacts, in real time, and on the same screen. The location update is performed with a quick spot-check at 5-minute intervals so battery drain is negligible.
Mama offers free, live HD video calls but should the user find themselves in an emergency situation, the device will automatically record a live video and audio feed and transmit it to the devices of trusted contacts. This recording is automatically saved to the contacts’ devices once the recording is halted (including due to damages to the device).
This triggers a particularly loud alarm on the receiving end of the message, rather than a simple text, as many incidents happen at night and the trusted contact may be asleep.
The Mama app is in the final stages of development with a completed, working prototype. The completed Mama app will be primarily geared toward students, parents with children, and seniors.
In addition to empowering users with a greater sense of security, the app offers a tangible way to prevent serious situations from escalating and to help resolving criminal cases by collecting vital evidence.
In the words of Mobile Software AS CEO, Rich Larsen: “The simple act of letting a potential attacker know that everything is being monitored and that others are aware of your location can act as a deterrent to a potential attacker and gather evidence which can prevent further victimization”
